Sutherland trip – the lay back way part 2

The following day there was some excitement at the hotel as some bikes decided not to start. Never panic when you have Andy and Geoff around. Warren and Mark had their fingers in there too so one day they will become our Geoff and Andy. After a very nice breakfast we said our goodbyes and followed Bruno up to the SALT observatory. Hey all I can say it is a very fresh place to work at. Temperature was about 5 degrees with a slight 10 knot wind going through anything in its path including any thermal clothing you had on. The gentleman (can not remember his name) greeted us with such enthusiasm and with pride ready to show us his toy and this on a Sunday.

He told us some technical stuff which only he and Bruno understood but it was still interesting especially if you think that they do not use the big telescope for our star system. According to them it is too bright. They look beyond and investigate where we came from. He explained the mirror setup and how tolerance was a big factor for them.

After the talk Andy decided to go back to the Hotel as we will not be allowed to peepee for another 100km. After the round trip to the toilet we set off to the first gravel turnoff - the R356. Hey it was great to be on gravel again.

Mr. Valentino Rossi (aka myself) came out again. In no way to I ride irresponsible nor do I promote it but you go into that groove and then the smile just gets bigger.

A farmer stopped me half way so that he can give me Andy’s pride possessions. I can only presume Andy went to that happy place where I usually go to and never saw that his top box opened. We eventually caught him and gave his stuff back. Now to see a big man suck up to everyone at our snack break especially to his wife for some water was a good show. Remember he lost his camel bag and the water ran out. It cost him a big kiss for a small sip of Anne’s water and remember he was thirsty. Pump Bruno’s tyre up again as it was still playing up.

After the good show we left again and eventually landed in Ceres. We filled up and pump those tyres again. Everyone agreed to meet at the Calabash.

I left late and followed Bruno who also did not know where the place was. Good thing we have GPS. Arrived a bit late but who cares. After a beer or two some us decided to leave in a convoy. We went over Bains Kloof which was a sight for sore eyes. It was just tourist in cars that kept us up a bit but maybe a good thing because it was beautiful.

Once we reached the bottom of the pass Mr.Stripes then led the way and took myself; Rhian and Bruno all the way to the intersection of the M5 and N1 where we departed our own way. Thank you Mr. Stripes.

For those who organised this trip – THANK YOU

Thanks for doing our trip report - awesome!

I was also doing some low flying home on Sunday (in my defence I was just trying to keep up with Geoff Kite) which costs me a taillight.

Darnit!  It seems the more confidence I gain the more stuff I break on my bike Laughing

All in all - it was really good riding with all of you.

Big shout out to Anne and Andy and of course Heidi driving our back-up vehicle

I think you lost your tail light much earlier Erica. Check photo 5, it's already missing. So obviosly you were already being a hooligan out there in the Karoo.Cool
