Beginners Gravel road ride- Sunday 22nd August 2010

The BMWMCCC club has organised a gravel road ride for beginners and pillions in and around Durbanville and Paarl.

Meet before 08H00 Plattekloof Engen  - irrespective or rain, wind or shine, the ride will go ahead.

At 08H15, after I have checked off memberships and numbers, we will ride off towards Noorde Paarl via the farm roads.

We ride via Adderly road then via Spes Bona, Fisantekraal and a few other gravel roads to within 1 kilometer of our brunch stop in Paarl.

We return via a slightly different route and will end off in Adderly road, Durbanville shortly after 13H00

This ride is suited to riders new to gravel roads, riders who often ride gravel and is pillion friendly.

Total distance is 170 kilometers 60% on gravel.

 Eta back in Durbanville 13H00.

We have planned a very tame water crossing on the route, (both ways) so we can give instruction on water crossings.

There is a R50.00 fee for non club members. (club dues not paid or not registered).

There will not be a back up bakkie following the bikes.

We have three riders trained in First Response with a medical kit.

Ride Captain’s Andy Connell and Pete O’Hanlon will lead the ride with Annie riding sweep.

Annie n I each have room for one pillion, first come, first served.

Let me know if you would like to join your fellow Club members on this nice and easy Club outing. If you post on the Forum please use your real name.

Interested parties to mail Annie on anne@abarc.co.za or 082 4210003 to confirm attendance.

P.S. This is a gravel road ride

I have been asked by a club member if his better half can join us on her Kawasaki.

The answer is, "of course if your partner is on another marque, they will still be welcome."

It's about the biking and if we can help get your partner onto gravel more often, it's all good.

If numbers get large, we'll split into two groups.

Venue can take 24 brunchers.

I'd like to join... either to lend a hand, or simply just be a nuisance. :D I understand if there is no space.... I'll just cry quietly into my helmet.
There are so many problems in this world. Luckily there's a wristband available for almost all of them.

But the ride will take place irrespective of the weather.

I'm confident the roads will be fine, even if a light rain settles the dust.

I have not received any SMS or email and this is the first time I have heard the start point has changed, thank goodness I just logged in and saw your post!? I would have waited at the Engen in Hendrik Verwoerd Drive for nothing? Where are we now meeting??

ps. oh Pete won't be there, he is in the Transkei.

Morning, its a wet wet Sunday morning.

For those that do come along to the start point- we will ride both tar group and dirt grioup.

Due to road conditions, we will split into a tar ride group and a dirt ride group

Annie will lead the tar riders

Andy will lead the dirt riders.

Only people pretty comfortable on wet dirt should join the gravel as there is a lot of snot on some parts only of some roads.

See you there.

So how did you guys manage to drown the bikes?  It seems to me some people were riding too fast in the water and the crest of their bow wave was right on the air intake.  But at least you learnt to clear a drowned bike.

How did the 2010 1200 GS do with regard to the air pipe from the airbox on the left pot being right at the bottom of the airbox (i.e. any water at all in the airbox ends up in the cylinder)?

Glad I missed it - am sick with a cold and really did not need to get wet feet.

Andy and Anne,

We had a great time until you led us astray and we ended up drowing a few bikes!  Wouldn't have wanted it any other way..   THANKS CandyMan for all the photos!
