August 1979

...when the price of petrol was about R0.25/litre, and the price of bread was about R0.10 a loaf.... A tank of petrol went about 200kms, and during the boycott years, one could only fill up between 6am and 6pm... The following snippet of the BMWMCC origin was provided by René Verhulp (Cheesy), our longest serving member (almost 30 years of membership!). The BMWMCC was formed in a Pinelands flat by 7 riders during the August of 1979 and was initiated by the late Brian Hultzer. The founding members were Brian and Margaret Hultzer, Brian Peak (USA), Mike Clapham (UK), Brian Joyce, Gary Wheeler, and René Verhulp. The first general meeting with about 90 BMW riders was held in September 1979 in the then Glendower Hotel in Observatory. The first outing was the Purple Cow, an ice cream parlour in Sea Point, which was to become the inaugural event. Two years later (1981), the venue was switched to the well-known Dixie's in Simonstown, and is attended still today by bikes and bikers of varying vintages. According to Oscar van Zyl, another of our long-standing members, annual rallies were held far and wide and were national events. Some of the places rallies were held at: Margate, Plett, Saldahna, Blyderpoort, East London, PE, Port Alfred, Knysna, Brenton,Hazyview, Fish River,Wild Coast Club meetings were held at the Cape Town German club for the next 22 years.

That is very interesting! I had no idea of these facts. And wow, 10c for bread. How ridiculously cheap that sounds in the present context!
